Peru’s leftist presidential candidate Roberto Sanchez clinched a spot in next month’s runoff election on Wednesday, official results showed, just hours after prosecutors indicted him on campaign finance charges and sought a prison sentence of more than five years.
So Sanchez gets indicted for campaign finance violations and still advances to the runoff? The system is a joke—criminal charges don’t seem to matter anymore.
I’m voting for Sanchez despite the indictment. The other candidate is a corporate puppet, and at least Sanchez wants to help the poor. The charges are just political mudslinging.
A 5-year prison sentence and he’s still in the race? Peru needs to clean up its politics. No one should be allowed to run for president while facing serious charges like this.
Sanchez’s support shows how desperate Peruvians are for change. They’re willing to overlook the indictment because the establishment has failed them so badly.
