A French passenger who was on a cruise ship hit by a hantavirus outbreak has tested positive for the virus and her condition is deteriorating, French Health Minister Stephanie Rist said on Monday. The passenger was among five French people who were on the ship. The four other passengers tested negative. So far French authorities have traced 22 contact cases. FRANCE 24’s Environment Editor Valerie Dekimpe tells us more.

So five French passengers on that cruise ship, only one tests positive and her condition is deteriorating… that’s scary. Hope she pulls through, but 22 contact cases traced already sounds like it could spread.
Health Minister Stephanie Rist confirmed the passenger’s condition is worsening. Makes you wonder how many other cruise ships have had similar issues that went unreported.
Interesting that out of five French passengers, four tested negative. But with 22 contact cases being traced, it shows how quickly hantavirus can spread in closed environments like a cruise ship.
Valerie Dekimpe said on FRANCE 24 that authorities are tracing contacts. Good to see France being proactive, but I worry about undetected cases among the crew or other passengers who might have left the ship before symptoms appeared.
