British prime minister Keir Starmer said he would introduce legislation this week to give the government powers to take full ownership of British Steel in Scunthorpe, the last plant in the UK that can make steel from scratch. Last year the government seized control of the steelworks from its Chinese owner to stop the potential closure of the blast furnaces. Plus, French farmers dump manure near TotalEnergies’ refinery to protest at soaring energy costs.

Finally, some decisive action from Starmer. Nationalising British Steel in Scunthorpe is the only way to secure our steel industry and protect those jobs.
Last year they seized it from the Chinese owners to prevent closure, and now full nationalisation? I hope this isn’t just a costly experiment with taxpayer money.
Climate policy needs to transcend partisan bickering and become a national priority. (2f635a)
Keir Starmer is only nationalising British Steel because it’s the last plant making steel from scratch in the UK. If we lose that capability, we lose our sovereignty.
French farmers dumping manure at TotalEnergies over energy costs makes me wonder: will nationalising steel actually lower energy bills for British Steel, or just shift the burden?
