The US president will arrive with tech leaders including Elon Musk and Tim Cook, with trade, AI and Taiwan all set to be discussed
Donald Trump is due to arrive in Beijing on Wednesday evening, the first visit to China by a US president in nearly a decade, as he seeks to mend power and prestige weakened by the war in Iran.
Trump will bring tech leaders, including Elon Musk of Tesla and Tim Cook of Apple, and plans for headline-grabbing deals. He has said he expects China’s leader, Xi Jinping, would “give me a big, fat hug when I get there”.

Tim Cook and Elon Musk tagging along? That’s a clear sign this summit is about tech as much as trade. Apple’s supply chain depends on China.
Calling Xi a ‘smart cookie’ and expecting a ‘big, fat hug’? Classic Trump theater, but I doubt Xi will be that warm after all the tariff talk.
First US president in China in almost a decade? That says a lot about how tense relations have been. Let’s hope they can actually make progress on AI and Taiwan.
This ‘big, fat hug’ line feels like he’s trying to distract from the Iran war mess. Trade talks are important, but the timing seems off.
I’m just glad they’re talking about Taiwan directly. That’s the real powder keg, not tariffs. Hope Musk and Cook’s presence doesn’t just make it a photo op.
